Testimonials

I am a new owner/teacher with the Smith’s School of English franchise system. I own the Koenji School in Tokyo and opened officially on 19 July 2005.

I was Believer in what I had been told by Mark Smith once I had spoken to two other Tokyo franchisees. Mark has been true to his word and gave me all the support that I asked for in setting up my school.

My only concern was how would I get recognition in Tokyo when Smith’s head office is in Osaka. Well, that has caused no concern because of the success of the direct marketing techniques such as handing out flyers to prospective clients in your area being very professionally connected to the head office sales staff. In conjunction being visible in the area by using local restaurants, shops, etc (to support your activities) – wearing a Smith’s T-shirt is certainly one way of being known by the locals. Mark Smith passed on these ideas and, as I knew nothing about marketing a language school, I have followed the system as taught at training and it is giving me results. Having a great website is certainly effective advertising as well.

I must also mention that the Smith’s support staff is fantastic. You don’t have to speak Japanese as they take the booking, close the sale (after the trial lesson) and they also do the administrative work, other than those items that you record during lessons. The help they provide in real estate search and negotiation is top class.

In closing, to date, I have found Mark Smith to be “straight down the line”: telling it like it is and giving me solid advice on how to be successful in the English teaching business. I love being in Japan and I love teaching with small (no more than three in a class) groups.

If you want to be your own boss and teach English in Japan I believe my experience to date indicates that everyone can be a success using this well tried system – “what you put in you get out”. In this case the well-tried system is what Mark Smith and his team have proven and taught you to do. I have not second-guessed the Smith’s team at all. I have just got on with doing what they say works in this marketplace and it certainly looks like it will work for me.
