I really enjoy reading the news in Japan and keeping up-to-date on all the amazing or wild and crazy inventions that are constantly popping up in the headlines. The Japanese people pride themselves on their technology and constant mission to make their lifestyle a lot more convenient. A lot of their ideas inspire [...]

I am a big fan of traditional Japanese sweets, especially when served with green tea. They are typically made from natural ingredients, many of which are plant-based.
I often see numerous varieties at the supermarket but I don’t know many of them so I usually buy the same 2 or 3.
However, over the past year [...]

As summer draws to a close, it’s time to once again look at the variety of students that Shimokitazawa Smiths is attracting. For the first time since we started managing and teaching at Shimokita branch we are attracting University students.
This is pretty exciting for me as it shows a keen interest by young people [...]

On Sunday, September 14th, 2008 I went grape picking in Okayama Prefecture with my wife, her cousin, her mother and her mother’s friend. We had a great time!
Here’s a picture of me picking some grapes.

I think about this question a lot. It is a very important question that we Smith’s Teacher-Owners must always keep in mind. We must strive in everything we do to make joining our schools the best choice for prospective students. The basic differences between Smith’s School of English and other privately run schools or from [...]

I once read that amazingly 20% of the world’s earthquakes happen right here in Japan. I have lived here for close to 14 years now and luckily have yet to experience one that lasted longer than a few seconds. I forget where I learnt it but I always thought that if one does occur that [...]

About one month ago I decided to put my very basic and recently acquired video making skills to use and I created a video introduction for Smiths School of English in Horie, which can now be viewed on the Smiths School of English Horie homepage.
I thought about creating this video for three reasons.
First, I [...]

Please welcome Tyler Jonas Bowman to Azamino SSE and to the world in general. He arrived late Friday evening on September 5th after his mom endured 24 long hours of labor. Just check out that smile and you’ll see that he was well worth the effort.

Well, almost… Actually there were 2 winners here at Azamino SSE. Maybe you remember our baby pool ? When we ran out space in the first one, a second pool was devised.

Two weeks ago I had a very inexpensive, nice day and night soaking in the natural hotspring waters of Hakone. While it is not the most extravagant place I have stayed at, it suited all our needs. “Kappa Tengoku” is located just 3 minutes from Hakone Yumoto Station. I got a room for two for [...]

The popularity of manga – or comic books – in Japan really is phenomenal. It doesn’t seem to matter where you are, what you’re doing, or how many people you’re surrounded by. If you take a good look around you, you might be surprised to find someone (or several people) indulging themselves in [...]

As you probably know by now, my wife Yoko and I are great fans of driving around Japan and my wheels have traveled across 30 prefectures. We love going to our favorite places over and over again but just as rewarding is searching out new ones, fabulous places that are sometimes missed on people’s itineraries. There [...]

September is when a lot of students go back to school after their summer holidays and after the August obon holiday when many Japanese have a holiday. It’s a great time to put some extra effort into promotion to get new students. I will be handing out flyers and dropping flyers into mailboxes in Tsukaguchi. Yesterday I [...]

Here at Smith’s School of English we really have the opportunity to be our own boss. We have the chance to teach our students directly or hire teachers and just be the business owner and manager. I don’t know if I can speak for the other Smith’s teacher-owners but I for one have never felt [...]
