A couple of weeks ago, Japan celebrated a public holiday. I had been speaking with one of my students for some time about getting together for a fishing trip as it was an interest we both shared. This holiday seemed like a good time to see what fishing in Japan was all about.
I was picked up at a very early 5:00am from my Smith School at Sakai-Higashi and we set off for the southern coastline. Thankfully it was a really warm day for mid November. We put in a solid fishing effort for about 6 hours. Fishing in Japan sure is different to fishing in Australia…..a fact I was grateful to learn first hand. It was the most crowded fishing spot I have ever seen! Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to provide my wife with any big fish for dinner even though many smaller fish were caught. We cooked these on the spot as they were reeled in. This was another novel thing that I enjoyed.
I was thinking in the car on the way home what a great day it had been. The fact that I am able to share my interests with my students and develop some real friendships along the way made me feel really lucky to have chosen the career path in Japan that I did.
