Last Monday I was discussing the issue of ‘marriage’ from the Lets Talk section of the Curriculum with a very talkative, confident high level student. She is currently dating a foreign guy so recently our lessons have resembled counseling sessions (at no extra cost)! I often teach her pieces of English that she can use with her boyfriend, her favourite so far being ‘bring home the bacon’. As the conversation developed, we talked about her future and she suddenly shouted ‘marriage means death’. I was a little taken aback by this outburst, myself being a happily married man and after she had finished explaining I taught her the phrase ‘marriage is the fastest way to the grave’. She was so excited about learning this and using it with her boyfriend I’m a bit worried that she’ll arrive at her next lesson single . . . again!
