Financial details:
Annual turnover 8 million. Fixed Monthly Expenses 250,000.
School history:
My wife and I opened Azamino School as a two room school in the summer of 2004 and have been extremely happy with its success. It grew quickly to our desired level and over the past 7 and a half years has provided a very profitable returned on effort.
Reason for selling:
It was not our intention to sell the school but we are in a position of having no choice. We recently discovered our eldest son has special needs and requires early childhood intervention. We aren’t be able to get this intervention in English in Japan so were are returning to our home in Canada.
Facilities:
When we opened the school, we made a conscious effort to make our school a beautiful, warm and inviting place that would make the students feel welcome. We invested a lot into the layout, signage, furniture and fixtures in the school. There are two comfortable and fully equipped class rooms each with a wooden table and matching chairs. The lobby has two designer cowhide chairs and an ottoman as well as beautifully designed book shelf and office desk work area. The school is equipped with everything you would need. Apple computer, second monitor, scanner/printer, fax, copier, telephone, small refrigerator, coffee maker, vacuum, heater, fan, laminator. There is an air conditioner in each classroom, a white board and a set of Smiths curriculum. There is a large assortment of English Education readers, textbooks and cards for both adults and children.
Location:
The school is located three minutes from Azamino station, Yokohama and is 20 minutes from Shibuya. It is at the end of the Yokohama Municipal Subway line and is an express stop on the Tokyu Denentoshi line. It is primarily a residential area with many new residential developments. It’s in the Aoba ward which is one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Yokohama which may have had a little something to do with it's success. The station opened about 30 years ago and is still growing. There are numerous parks, good shopping and a major shopping center at the next station. The school itself is in a beautiful two room apartment on the corner of a busy street. It is on the fourth floor above an eye-clinic and a sports juku (cram school) and has two large flowered signboards out front.
Competition:
There is the regular mix of schools in the area. However our services and fee structure are superior.
Smiths Coaching:
The educational system at Smiths is fabulous and our system, coaching philosophy and our teachers are the best in the industry. Recently I have been working with Mark Smith and have implemented a computer assisted coaching system for the last two and a half years that works in tandem with the Smith Curriculum. It allows for the presentation of curriculum on computer screens in the classroom. It has made coaching very enjoyable and the students have really seen the value in it.
School Training:
Smith's Head office provides full initial and ongoing training and I am more than happy to work with you to get you on your feet and settled into your new surroundings, meet the students and get comfortable with the system.
Growth & Expansion:
This school has constantly performed well and has a good reputation in the neighborhood. A modest amount of advertising promotions has been keeping a steady flow of new students coming in matching attrition. We are currently only running one classroom, however with some local promotion there I see some growth potential. There are a number of possibilities for this school. It can continue with one class and one teacher as I have been doing. Another possibility is that the second class can be opened up with part-time staff. Another option is the school can be turned into a livable one room school thereby reducing living expenses for the owner. All of these cases are viable and profitable options.
